Workshops + Writers Groups
I’ll be your writing coach
If your journalism career is starting or stalling, perhaps you need to talk strategy. Take advantage of my 25 years of journalism experience (both as a writer and an editor) and my teaching of first-person writing to ask questions about where to next. Whether you need to fine-tune your pitching, work on article structure and understand more about what editors want, or you’re a writer needing help structuring their book (memoir and non-fiction is my speciality – check out my workshops) or understanding how to get published, let’s take it to Zoom! A 1-2-1 session costs $120 for an hour. An optional extra is $50 for me reading up to 3000 words beforehand.
Book my memoir workshop
Personal writing, be it book-length memoir, blogging or essay, can be sticky. In these workshops for writers of all levels of experience, I trouble-shoot the concerns you may have about making the leap, from protecting yourself to protecting the family and handling the media. There are plenty of writing exercises to familiarise you with revisiting your younger self, beginning your book with a bang, describing difficult people, putting disclaimers and introductions to good use, finding your themes, identifying your audience and jogging your memory.
I hold these both online and in person. Previous clients include The Monthly magazine; Catherine Deveny’s Gunnas writers’ groups, Asia Pacific Writers and Translators, Bendigo Writers Festival and Avid Reader.
Six-week writers groups
Every Sunday at 12pm (I’m in Melbourne), I lead a writers group of four people on Zoom for an hour. They share their memoir material, fiction or non-fiction, including essays, articles and books-in-progress, of up to 1000 words each week. Since I launched this group in 2021, two of the regular participating writers have had book deals and many others have had articles published. Find out more!
